BITZER

BITZER Kältemittelschieber

The BITZER refrigerant slide rule brings a classic refrigeration tool to the smartphone, with data on more than 100 natural and synthetic refrigerants and pressure and temperature conversion with a slide rule.

(01) Challenge

Anyone working in refrigeration needs reliable values on the go. At what pressure does a refrigerant boil, where is its dew point, and which oil and safety group belong to it? The classic cardboard refrigerant slide rule was therefore to move onto the smartphone, for more than 100 refrigerants and in both metric and imperial units.

(02) Solution

We built the apps for iOS and Android including the backend. At their core is a calculation engine written in C that derives the critical values of each refrigerant from mathematically complex equations of state and delivers exactly the same results on every platform. On top sits the slide rule itself, whose scales for pressure, dew point and boiling point are rendered dynamically for each refrigerant, unit and ambient pressure and slide smoothly.

(03) Highlights

The app takes the air pressure automatically from the barometer or GPS. Refrigerants can be searched, filtered by common and natural refrigerants or by their global warming potential and saved as favourites, each with substance data, safety group, GWP, ODP and oil type. In the App Store, users rate the app 4.7 out of 5 stars.
